Understanding MZ generation (MZ세대)

Have you ever heard about MZ generation in Korea?

1. Definition of MZ generation

MZ generation is people who were born in early 1980s to early 2000 (millenial generation) and mid 1990 to early 2000 (Z generation).

The most distingtiveness about MZ generation is they are "digital" generation.

- Use cell phone most frequently and widely

- Follow the latest trend

- Use SNS very well

They tend to

- Care about individual (themselves) than community

- be more flexible to change

- prefer new and unique things

- spend their money on whatever they like more easily

- spend a lot of their time and money on fun and simple things

- invest a lot of money on stocks and coins

Because of those characteristics the gap between rich and poor is getting bigger and bigger in this generation.

2. Understanding MZ generation language

It is often difficult to communicate with them since they use very unique slangs.

I'd like to share some of slangs that I've heard a lot from those MZ generation these days.

1) 머선129 sounds similar to dialect of 무슨일이야?(what happened?): 무슨일이고?

- it is a broken Korean but they use it to describe when dumfounded/unexpected thing happened.

2) 핑프 is a short term for finger princess or finger prince

- it's a person who doesn't even bother to search something online (when they can simply search online)

He/she always ask people around them

3) 5°5:5  (오도오대오)  sounds similar to 어서오세요

- it is also a broken Korean but people often use in the chat

4)꾸꾸꾸 is a short term for 꾸며도 꾸질 꾸질, which means even if you dress up and wear make up, you still don't look good

5) 삼귀다 is when you are getting to know someone before actually dating (same as 썸타다)

dating someone/seeing someone is 사귀다 (4귀다) in Korean, so before starting to seeing that person/dating that person is 삼귀다 (3귀다)
